A preface: Running away wasnât really going to hit my wallet. When I was twenty-six, the trust fund my grandparents set up for me vested. The same age requirement applied to all their grandchildrenâs trust funds. I wasnât rolling in it, but I didnât have to worry about a retirement plan, and I got to take great vacations whenever I wanted. Yeah, I also splurged on bags and shoes, but only sometimes. I had a job because people needed to be gainfully employed and have a sense of purpose. I didnât want to work for my familyâs winery or vineyard. We wouldâve fought every day if we worked together, and I loved them too much to have a repeat performance of the split between my father and his brother, my uncle Tony, who moved his family to Connecticut and never returned to California. As previously mentioned, my aspirations after getting my degree at Cal werenât happening, and Iâd wanted something of my own that kept me close to family. For the most part, I liked working at Shangri la, and unless and until that changed, or I got my shit together and went back for my PhD, I was where I wanted to be.
I had a few minutes on the plane before we had to stow our electronics. I texted Lola to tell her I was off on one of my last-minute vacays, and I sent substantially the same text to Bernadette, who I knew would be none too pleased. When the flight attendant closed the cabin door, I knew Iâd lucked out. I had a seat in first class with no one next to me.
After we took off, I got a blanket, lifted the arm between the seats, and sort of stretched out. I was leaning next to the window â Iâd pulled down the shade â and I had one of those little pillows behind my head. I had to bend my legs or else my feet dangled into the aisle, but I was semi-comfortable. I was going to force myself to go to sleep even though I didnât know if I could calm my brain. One thing for absolute certain, I refused to spend the next five and half hours crying.
It took a while to drift off. First there was the safety lecture and demonstration, then the pilot chatted for a few minutes about climbing to forty thousand feet to try to avoid turbulence over the Rockies. Really, I didnât need to know that. Then, because it was first class, they were dropping food the moment the seatbelt sign dinged off. Iâd gotten a bottle of water, and told the flight attendant to skip the food. Even if I couldnât sleep, there was no way was I eating. There was a slim chance I might work up an appetite if they brought out Dunkinâ Donuts, but I didnât think so.
My stomach was in knots, my heart hurt, and my head was pounding. Something vile had lodged in my esophagus, and that rock lay heavy in my chest.
